THE INNOVATIVE NEW TICKETING AREA CONCEPT AT BIRMINGHAM INTERNATIONAL TRAIN STATION IS PART OF VIRGIN TRAINS' VISION FOR 'STATIONS OF THE FUTURE'. CENTRALLY LOCATED IN THE CONCOURSE, THE HUB PROVIDES A DESIGN CONCEPT THAT COULD BE IMPLEMENTED ELSEWHERE ACROSS THE VIRGIN TRAINS NETWORK.
The newly developed £1.3m station model has reimagined the traditional ticket office, replacing the booking office window with multi-functional service points. The design responds to the type and scale of passenger movement through the space and brings staff out from behind glazed screens to interact with the public.
Relocating the Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) so that customers are greeted by people and not machines reinvents the language of the ticket office and creates a space to develop and share ideas. Through analysing the circulation flow of commuters, NEC visitors and arrivals from the airport, the space has been developed to ensure that differing needs, from comfortable waiting areas, clear signange to speed of passage, are met. The design elevates and broadens the purchasing experience, providing an environment that improves interaction and increases the openness of the layout, creating visionary and forward thinking travel experiences.
