project overview

A modern multi-storey car park, promoting safer, smoother travel

Castle Car Park is a clear, legible arrival point to Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre. This multi-storey car park (MSCP) provides 471 parking spaces, replacing outdated town centre parking provision. It’s a modern, fit-for-purpose facility that is easier to use, safer to move through and ready for changing travel habits.

Bringing parking to this brownfield site has helped Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council turn a prominent vacant plot into a purposeful town centre gateway. By moving parking to the edge of the centre, the scheme reduces unnecessary traffic in the core and supports a more people-first masterplan for new homes, workplaces and public realm.

Accessibility and safety is prioritised throughout, clear wayfinding and step free access make the building intuitive to navigate and comfortable for everyone to move through. With motorcycle parking alongside accessible spaces, Castle Car Park is an inclusive and sustainable transport hub for the town.

Castle Car Park is a vital addition to help secure Newcastle town centre’s future sustainability as a thriving place for everyone. Providing enhanced infrastructure like this underpins the council’s current regeneration which will draw different groups of people into the area"

design concept

A distinctive design grounded in local identity

In a prominent location next to a conservation area, surrounded by Grade II listed buildings, the car park needed to thoughtfully reference its setting without simply replicating it.

Red brickwork grounds the building at street level, drawing on the warm red-brown tones that define the surrounding streets. Above, profiled perforated aluminium panels follow the sloping decks, alternating their orientation to create a calm rhythm across the elevations.

The perforations are laser cut to reproduce the council's castle emblem, lending the building its name and a civic identity that belongs to this place.

Full-height glazed slots bring natural light into the stair and lift lobbies and, on the south-east corner, frame a view towards the Grade II listed Church of St. Giles, connecting the MSCP to the historic townscape and the listed heritage assets nearby.

sustainability

Low carbon, future-ready design

Across five storeys, we took a practical, fabric-first approach with a steel frame and facade designed to improve efficiency and reduce waste. By incorporating efficient lighting throughout, energy demand and whole life cycle cost are reduced. We implemented Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), including pre-cast cores, to speed up delivery and create flexibility for the future.

The car park includes 22 electric vehicle (EV) charging points and a dedicated cycle parking hub, promoting more sustainable, healthier methods of travel.
