project overview
Boosting career prospects through industry-relevant training
Supporting The Sheffield College in providing state of the art teaching and learning space for their service industry courses, we led the refurbishment and remodelling of existing spaces to form new barbering and catering facilities, also providing building surveying and principal designer for CDM services.
These spaces now form part of the college’s City Campus, which supports a wide range of practical courses and offers students an assortment of facilities to support their learning. The site includes a life-size plane simulator, an on-site restaurant, science and dental technology laboratories, construction workshops, a children’s nursery and a hair and beauty salon.
Experiential learning
Providing simulated industrial environments to support learning
To create a new practical room, teaching room and staff office to support the college’s barbering course, an existing spa and office area was converted to provide 18 new stations with carefully considered space around each to mimic a real-world salon. Two dedicated hair washing stations have also been provided.
Supporting the delivery of theoretical elements of the programme, a new classroom provides space for teaching and learning. Designed to enhance wellbeing, a new glazed screen from the atrium to the workroom encourages daylight, whilst supporting independent learning through passive supervision of the area.
Learning-focused layout
Embracing cutting edge technology to support catering courses
Providing high quality teaching facilities to deliver their catering courses, an existing kitchen area has been remodelled to provide workstations and industry-level electric cooking equipment for up to 20 learners.
The space is supported by state of the art camera technology, designed to be able to share live technical demonstrations around the room whilst learners stay at their stations. Electric ovens and hobs mirror the move in industry to adopt more sustainable ways of cooking and preparing food.
Ensuring the project delivered long-lasting and suitable facilities, we also removed the existing gas supply, carried out refurbishment works to the room fabric and provided replacement catering equipment.
To meet industry standards, the remodelling also included floor drainage, new vinyl flooring and coved skirting, upgrades of mechanical ventilation, installation of hygienic wall cladding and additional power supplies.
We worked with Denby Catering Equipment, who provided mechanical and electrical design, and Building Services Solutions Limited for the provision of specification and drawings to support the installation of electric heating.
The Sheffield College provides courses in hospitality and catering, professional bakery, cookery, supervision and restaurant food and drinks services which are all supported by this new high quality facility.
