Exeter Central Station

Exeter, UK

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Designing a safer, more accessible passenger experience

Under our longstanding relationship with Great Western Railway (GWR), we were initially commissioned in 2023 to review options and develop a feasibility study for improving the entrance, reducing congestion and modernising the ticket office at Exeter Central Station.

To ensure the final scheme would meet the aspirations of our client and their customers, we presented design options to stakeholders, which we refined in conjunction with feedback to develop the preferred solution. This involved expanding the concourse, relocating / expanding the ticket gate array and providing a modern help desk.

Once the designs were finalised, we were subsequently appointed to lead the £2.7m project to deliver the comprehensive redevelopment works.

station improvements

Delivering enhancements and supporting the local economy

Exeter Central Station is one of the South West’s busiest stations, welcoming almost three million passengers each year.

Designed to enhance the customer experience, eliminate peak-time bottlenecks and overcrowding on the stairwells, as well as greatly improving safety and accessibility, the station now boasts an expanded concourse and smart-ticket gatelines.

An open-plan customer assistance desk creates a welcoming and inclusive space, particularly for elderly residents, families and passengers with reduced mobility.

Supporting the local economy through the creation of new business units, the inclusion of the new retail space enables the busy station to become a supportive city centre hub.

Exeter Central sits at the heart of our city, connecting residents, businesses, students and visitors with opportunities in Exeter and across the South West. This capital investment recognises the importance of modern, high-quality transport infrastructure in supporting a growing and dynamic city like Exeter. These improvements will help ensure the station can meet increasing demand in the years ahead, while making it a more attractive and welcoming gateway to Exeter."
