project overview

Welcoming the community back to Fourteen Locks with a new visitor centre

We’re shaping a new visitors hub in Newport, replacing the former canal centre at Fourteen Locks with a high quality, inclusive and sustainable destination. Most importantly, it will provide local people, volunteers and visitors a place to meet, learn and enjoy the canal.

Set at the heart of this historic canalside landscape, the new visitor centre celebrates the character of the waterway. We shaped the design to feel rooted in place, while offering a fresh, future-ready public destination. It is a community-focused hub that supports heritage, wellbeing and everyday connection.

Inside, the visitor centre brings together a visitor information point, a museum and interpretation space, community meeting rooms, a cafe and commercial areas. This mix supports school visits, community groups, volunteering, exhibitions and everyday social moments, while helping keep the site active across the day and through the seasons.

We wanted the building to feel instantly welcoming, with the landscape always in view. It is a place to pause, learn and reconnect, shaped around the canal and the community that cares for it.”

design concept

Creating an inclusive, community-focused destination

To ensure everyone feels welcome from the moment they arrive, we have designed step-free routes throughout the building and its surroundings.

At the entrance, visitors are immediately drawn into the story of the canal. The museum and interpretation space sits at the heart of this first experience, sparking curiosity from the outset while remaining flexible enough to host changing exhibitions, school visits and community-led displays.

As people move through the building, views of the lake and canal remain consistently in sight. A clear and accessible entrance sequence naturally guides the eye towards the landscape beyond, reinforcing a sense of openness and connection to nature.

The cafe enjoys a prime position overlooking the water, offering a comfortable place to meet, pause and enjoy the setting, whether someone is visiting for the first time or returning as part of the local volunteering community.

Our meeting rooms are designed to support the everyday rhythm of the site, from informal catch-ups and training sessions to larger gatherings. An acoustic partition allows the spaces to combine into a single event room, filled with generous natural light and framed views of the lake.

Guided by net zero design principles, we have prioritised energy efficiency and carbon reduction, developing this approach in consultation with Newport City Council’s Carbon Reduction team to ensure the centre performs well for years to come, without pursuing formal certification.
