Our design for King's Quarter centres upon creating a new, cohesive place that will thrive and grow. Our masterplan includes new homes, leisure and start-up space, a hotel, a multi-storey car park, the refurbishment of King’s House to create a creative hub and food hall and roof-top bar.
The development links to the wider proposed enhancements of the King’s Square that proposes sweeping raised seating areas, fountains inspired by the Severn Bore, wild-planted green areas with trees and atmospheric coloured lighting after dark. Spaces for markets, outdoor dining, a temporary stage, outdoor cinema and other leisure uses are proposed to breathe new life into the area and will spill out into King’s Quarter.
By day and night, the area will be enlivened with cultural activities, live performances and pop up stalls.
The new homes include 20% affordable and are set within new healthy streets with access to amenity areas that will enhance residents' day-to-day lifestyles. 70,000ft2 of commercial space, including start-up space, will cultivate creative businesses and help to sustain and further activate this part of the city at all times.
Part of the redevelopment off Northgate Street has been identified as a suitable location for new homes which would be a combination of rented and affordable buying options, such as shared ownership. The need for affordable, good quality homes was outlined as a requirement in the city council's City Plan, as well as in other policy documents such as the Housing, Homelessness and Rough Sleeping strategy and the Driving up Design strategy.
The development acknowledges the area’s historical past and re-imagines it to meet current needs. Connectivity is improved via the creation of a new street, Cathedral View, with links to the Cathedral, the revamped King’s Square and Northgate Street.
The site is easily accessible from the new Gloucester Bus Station and Gloucester Railway Station, providing opportunities for modal change for residents and visitors. AHR has also proposed designs for a new and improved Train Station and landmark canopy.
The regeneration creates a new destination and a memorable experience for all. The development will act as a catalyst to promote the city as a healthy and vibrant place to live, work and invest.
