How we are driving development and investment opportunities in Huddersfield

by AHR
Over the decades, we’ve seen Huddersfield grow and adapt – welcoming new industries, technologies and ways of learning, while staying true to the distinctive character of its heritage.
Today, we remain deeply invested in the town centre’s future. From restoring historic landmarks to delivering state of the art spaces for education, healthcare and community life, our work continues to bridge the past with the future.
With roots dating back to 1835, we are proud of the pivotal role we have played – and continue to play – in shaping a town that blends tradition with ambition, creating places that serve today’s needs while inspiring future generations.
In collaboration with Huddersfield Unlimited and Kirklees Council, we’ve captured the town’s transformation.
Watch the video below to explore how regeneration, conservation and investment are shaping Huddersfield into a vibrant destination for business, culture and community.
Protecting and preserving the town’s historic roots
Our long-standing work in Huddersfield reflects our expertise in heritage conservation and adaptive reuse.
The Estate Buildings, a Grade II* Listed Italianate Gothic landmark underwent a programme of external repairs. We guided stonework, roof and chimney restoration in close consultation with Historic England and Kirklees Council, supported by a detailed Heritage Impact Statement.
Situated on St George’s Square, the Grade I Listed Huddersfield Train Station remains a vital gateway for the town. Our building consultancy team managed its refurbishment, enhancing the passenger experience while sensitively protecting the station’s unique heritage.
The station is part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), which involves a major programme of rail improvement in North England, delivered through a collaboration between Amey, BAM and Arup.
To preserve a culturally important arcade for future generations, we were appointed to provide a range of consultancy services to deliver the conservations works to the Byram Arcade - a Grade II Listed building and Huddersfield’s oldest shopping centre.
It remains home to independent businesses, including arts and crafts shops, designers, cafes, and restaurants, preserving its unique character at the heart of the town.
Huddersfield Town Hall has benefited from a programme of essential fabric repairs. Building on our long-standing partnership with the Council, our building consultancy team led the building’s restoration works, ensuring the continued protection and longevity of this Grade II Listed building for many years to come.

Equally significant is the George Hotel, another Grade II* Listed landmark located on St George’s Square.
Since its purchase by Kirklees Council in 2020, a careful three-phase plan was developed to optimise the layout and secure the George Hotel’s future. Our building consultancy team was appointed to the second phase of the project which involved carrying out vital structural and restoration repairs to the historic building.
The third phase looks to its complete refurbishment, remodel and redevelopment, tapping into our expertise in reusing and repurposing existing spaces to the forefront. As lead designers, we are working with GMI Construction Ltd, Queensberry Real Estate, Kirklees Council and a specialist consultant team.
Enriching the learning experience
Our relationship with the University of Huddersfield spans many years and includes the delivery of significant buildings across its campus.
- The Oastler Building, with its flexible teaching spaces, specialist laboratories and energy-efficient design, has become a distinctive feature of the town.
- Sovereign Design House has brought new purpose to a Grade II Listed former foundry bath house, carefully restoring original features while creating a welcoming cafe and exhibition space.
- The Joseph Priestley Building refurbishment transformed a 1960s structure into a bright, collaborative environment while improving its energy performance.
- The Sir John Ramsden Building is one of the oldest surviving warehouses of its type in Britain. We converted the Grade II Listed building into office accommodation for various university departments, as part of the wider campus regeneration.
- Home to the university’s faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, the Barbara Hepworth Building is an open, flexible learning hub that unites all disciplines.
A benchmark in healthcare education
Most recently, we have worked with the university on the National Health Innovation Campus masterplan - a transformative development focused on training future healthcare professionals and enhancing access to community health services across the North of England.
The first building to sit on the campus is the Daphne Steele Building. As the first university building designed to achieve the WELL Platinum Standard, it sets a new benchmark for healthy and sustainable environments in higher education.
Our innovative design reimagines the student experience, embedding the full patient journey from the outset. High-fidelity simulation spaces and community-facing clinics deliver immersive, real-world learning. Modular, adaptable and ‘sticky’ environments support interdisciplinary collaboration, encouraging people to stay, engage and belong whilst responding to evolving teaching and research demands.
The momentum continues with the Emily Siddon Building, the next major project on campus.
The specialist facility is a joint venture with the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust which also include a Community Diagnostics Centre, alongside health innovation, teaching in radiography and the capacity for further health trust clients.

We look forward to continuing our support for Huddersfield, a town as rich in history as it is in potential.
