project overview

Delivering innovative new facilities to support physics courses

To support flourishing student intake and enhance the institution’s specialist science facilities for future undergraduates, we led a project to provide an innovative new Physics Teaching Laboratory within room 3101 in B46 – the university’s Physics and Astronomy building, which forms part of the main campus in Highfield.

The University of Southampton currently welcomes over 14,000 undergraduate and almost 8,000 postgraduate students, making it the largest university in the South East of England by student numbers.

Acting as lead consultant, we provided project management, contract administration, architectural and CDM principal designer services, leading the project through RIBA Stages 3-7, in collaboration with key stakeholders, consultants and contractors.

SPECIALIST FACILITIES

Transforming an unused space into enhanced facilities

Providing a cutting-edge new teaching and research provision to support our client’s physics degrees and to enable more teaching of physics experiments, the works converted room 3101 into a new laboratory with associated teaching space.

To achieve this, works comprised a full strip out, redecoration of existing finished surfaces, replacement of floor coverings and the installation of mechanical and electrical services were undertaken, as well as installation of new lab benching.

CHALLENGES

Designing to suit research conditions and house equipment

Making room for specialist printing equipment, the project included blocking off one of two existing doors and using a shared hallway with another classroom for access. We ensured this was carried out safely and in line with building regulations by working in close collaboration with our key stakeholders, as well as statutory authorities such as Building Control.

A key challenge also included strict programme requirements to ensure the facility was ready for use by the start of the first semester.
