Planning approved for new regional cycling hub in Bristol
by AHR
We're delighted to be moving forward with the Bristol Regional Cycling Hub, a new and inclusive cycling and community destination set to transform a brownfield site.
The hub will bring a vibrant, traffic-free destination to Merriman’s and Henacre Open Space, shaped to make cycling a welcoming and accessible part of daily life for people of all ages and abilities across the city.
Central to the approved design is a one-kilometre closed-loop cycling circuit, built to regional standards and suitable for both training and competitive racing. In addition, a safe and traffic-free bikeability track will support everyone from young children building their first cycling skills to experienced riders, with inclusive sessions for disabled people also central to the programme
A thoughtfully designed two-storey community building sits at the heart of the scheme. Flexible rooms, workspaces and public amenities will give local groups, clubs and organisations a welcoming base to host events, share space and build lasting connections. Carefully orientated to respond to the surrounding neighbourhood, the building will minimise visual impact while creating a clear, inviting point of arrival for all who visit.
Our landscape design approach promotes connectivity, nature and everyday activity. A new perimeter footpath will offer a healthy, circular walking route around the site, encouraging more people to regularly move and engage with their surroundings.
Planned upgrades to National Cycle Network Route 41 and the Avon Cycleway will strengthen Bristol’s regional cycling connections, supporting sustainable and active travel across the city.
Thoughtful new planting and landscape enhancements will support local biodiversity and provide natural cooling, keeping the space enjoyable and resilient all year round. A car park with electric vehicle (EV) charging points, smart security measures and carefully considered lighting ensures easy, reassuring access for everyone, whatever their mode of travel.
Cycling can play such a positive role in people's everyday lives, and that's really what this project is about. We've helped to shape somewhere that feels genuinely welcoming, a place where anyone can arrive, feel comfortable and want to come back to. We're excited to see the project move forward."
