A resilient building with comfort, wellbeing and privacy at its heart

At Stafford Barracks, we shaped new junior ranks single living accommodation (SLA) that are calm, comfortable and built to last. The modular approach helped us achieve consistent quality, while keeping delivery practical within a live defence environment.

As part of the project, we reprovided accommodation that had previously been in older blocks, which were scoped for demolition. Throughout, we focused on what matters most for people living on base: privacy, wellbeing and spaces that supported rest between shifts. 

We focused on the details that matter in single living accommodation. Private space, good ventilation, acoustic comfort and reliable services all supported better rest and wellbeing."

design concept

A future-ready development

We designed the building to Passivhaus principles, prioritising insulation, airtightness and high quality ventilation. That combination supported steady temperatures and good air quality, day and night.

The bedrooms provide adequately sized living quarters for sleeping, leisure, storage and personal office space. We also ensured they were fully communication accessible, so people could live and connect comfortably.

We aligned the layout and amenity offer with MoD requirements, including JSP 315. This kept decisions consistent and supported a reliable, repeatable SLA model for the defence estate.

Sustainability targets shaped the scheme from the outset, guided by modular construction and a performance-led design approach.
