Old Medical School
Leeds, UK
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Transforming a historic landmark into the future of health innovation
Supporting our architectural team which has been appointed by Scarborough Group International to deliver a scheme which will sensitively restore and repurpose the Old Medical School Building in Leeds, our geomatic consultancy team has provided a suite of as-built models to support the designs.
Celebrating its history, the Grade II* listed building will be sensitively redeveloped, combining heritage with modern interventions to create the health-tech focused innovation hub. The refurbishment will accommodate co-working spaces, meeting rooms, event spaces, office and laboratories, promoting collaboration between start-ups, established industry leaders, academic institutions and healthcare providers.
SPECIALIST SURVEYS
Providing detailed models to support extensive redevelopment designs
We created a detailed Scan to BIM model of the historic building, alongside a 3D MEP model and a topographical model. These were all constructed from detailed data collected by high tech laser scanners, combined with the skilled application of Ordnance Survey (OS) site control, ensuring precise coordinates were established and managed.
The as-built models of the existing structure are an essential part in the design for the remodelling works, enabling our architectural team to draw up comprehensive plans for the extensive works, as well as supporting them in efficiently planning other crucial aspects, such as health and safety and the delivery of materials to site.
GATHERING DATA
Protecting a building steeped in history
Ensuring no damage was caused to the Grade II* listed building, we used non-intrusive laser scanners to collect the intricate Tudor Gothic architectural details, including all internal and external aspects.
The Old Medical School building consists of several complex design features such as arched stonework, glazed domes, spiral staircases, varying window types and a series of different roof styles, including flat and pitched.
Not only are laser scanners capable of effortlessly collecting the often multifaceted and elaborate features found on historical buildings, but they also remove the need for expensive and time-consuming scaffolding or cherry pickers, reducing, if not eradicating, the risk of damage and saving our clients time and money.
