Airedale Hospital Multi-Storey Car Park

Keighley, UK

AHR Carpark AiredaleMSCP Architecture Keighley v1n

project overview

A sustainable car park, enhancing patient and staff experience

Located in the southwest corner of the wider Airedale Hospital masterplan, the new Airedale Hospital Multi-Storey Car Park (MSCP) delivers 1,280 much-needed spaces for patients, visitors and staff. As the primary point of arrival, the MSCP plays a key role in shaping a more welcoming hospital experience.

To support the development of the new Airedale Hospital, the car park will significantly increase the number of available parking spaces across the site. We are also part of the design team working on the new hospital building, which is being delivered through the New Hospital Programme (NHP) and uses the Hospital 2.0 framework to help improve patient outcomes and experiences.

The car park design incorporates suggestions gathered from consultations with the local community, prioritising accessibility throughout. Split over five levels, key design features include larger car parking bays, well-lit areas, legible wayfinding, clear digital signage and step-free access to create an inclusive and intuitive experience for all.

New pedestrian routes connect the car park to the hospital campus, offering easy access to and from the hospital.

The car park’s carefully crafted facade allows natural light and ventilation to flow through the structure, supporting people’s wellbeing, while offering an attractive and modern first impression.

Our design supports Airedale NHS Foundation Trust’s sustainability goals and NHP requirements that new health infrastructure contributes to a net zero carbon future. Photovoltaic panels improve energy efficiency, whilst electric vehicle (EV) charging points for both staff and visitors promote sustainable methods of travel. Biodiverse landscaping and enhanced public realm create a calmer, more welcoming environment.

FACADE DESIGN

A dynamic, nature inspired facade

The facade softens the visual impact of the MSCP, while creating a distinctive architectural identity. Laser-cut panels featuring leaf and branch patterns complement the local landscape and bring texture, depth and movement.

Variation in the spacing of these patterns offers views across the surrounding setting, strengthening connections with nature and elevating the overall user experience.
