ABBEY AREA PHASE 2

  • ABBEY AREA PHASE 2 FOR CAMDEN COUNCIL, BEING DELIVERED BY WATES, IS OUR NEW COMMUNITY AND HEALTH CENTRE AS PART OF THE BOROUGH'S COMMUNITY INVESTMENT PROGRAM, COMBINING BOTH EXISTING SERVICES INTO ONE MODERN BUILDING THAT WILL PROVIDE A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION TO MEET LOCAL NEEDS. THE TWO USES ARE DESIGNED SO THAT THEY CAN OPERATE IN TANDEM AS GOOD NEIGHBOURS.

  • Our design creates a healthy and friendly environment with strong connections to the newly improved landscape that welcomes the community and provides a sustainable solution.

The community-driven facility benefits from an integrated approach. The Community Centre on the ground floor provides valuable resources and enjoys access to the outdoor garden room and creche, whilst the Health Centre above will provide new modern consultation and GP surgery.  The design has been future-proofed to enable the entire building to operate as a single entity.

The modern and contemporary architectural approach uses a series of timber vertical elements to create an organic and playful “barcode” pattern on the building elevations. Visual links throughout strengthen the connection with nature and the surrounding landscape, with generous ceiling heights allowing natural light to fill all areas of the internal spaces.

The balance of signifying the arrival and civic presence has been created by forming a single storey timber arch on the edge of Belsize Road which extends out from the building form. A series of external spaces are then created through a timber climbing structures inviting people to walk through and approach the building.

The surrounding landscape has been transformed into a high quality new park with improved access and a series of character areas to be enjoyed by all.

A consultation-led design has strongly incorporated community feedback to ensure that the building and space creates a new area that they can be proud of and supports the Council’s aspirations.
