project overview
Inclusive SEND school creating a nurturing learning environment
Queensway Academy is a new specialist SEND school in Shropshire, thoughtfully designed to provide a nurturing, inclusive and practical learning environment for pupils aged 11–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Reflecting our expertise in inclusive education design, Queensway Academy is a school that empowers students and teachers alike.
Developed for the Learning Community Trust (LCT), the new academy is co-located with the existing Queensway North School site and will accommodate students from the existing Queensway South School forming a cohesive and efficient education campus that promotes collaboration and shared success.
This co-location strategy encourages a strong partnership between the schools, with all students benefitting from the existing high-quality sports and catering facilities. Set within mature Shropshire woodland, our design celebrates its natural surroundings.
Opportunities for outdoor learning are created through dedicated spaces such as a forest learning area, multi-use games area (MUGA), and a central courtyard that forms the social heart of the school. These areas foster connection, physical activity and hands-on discovery, supporting the school’s holistic approach to learning and wellbeing.
Inside, the layout is carefully zoned with one wing of the building accommodating the home base classes whilst the other wing houses the specialist learning spaces. The central facilities including the hall, admin and therapy spaces are located in the middle wing of the building connected by a glazed corridor with views onto the central courtyard offering clarity, comfort and flexibility as pupils’ needs evolve.
Specialist classrooms including a Imedia suite, therapy rooms and calm spaces are seamlessly integrated to create a safe, structured and supportive SEND environment.
Queensway Academy is a place where every student can thrive, exemplifying our commitment to SEND architecture and the creation of specialist learning environments that inspire confidence, growth and lifelong success.”
