Dreghorn Barracks
Edinburgh, UK
project overview
Thoughtful defence estate improvements that put people first
As part of the Army Basing Programme (ABP), we delivered a carefully planned development to support major unit moves, including the relocation of 3 Rifles Regiment from Redford Barracks and 521 Squadron from Craigiehall Barracks. The wider programme assessed practical options for accommodating rebasing linked to unit relocations from Germany.
The preferred solution at Dreghorn makes strong use of available, suitable building stock, minimises impact on the estate and fits comfortably with the existing function of the barracks. That means service people can settle faster, keep routines steady and feel supported by spaces that are built around how they work and train.
Alongside new accommodation, we delivered offices, training facilities, workshops, welfare spaces, duty-staff sleeping and changing / shower facilities. A key focus was providing enough technical, office and training accommodation to help 521 Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) become operationally functional.
This included a fully licensed EOD Facility, comprising an Explosive Store, Training Facility and Garaging, supported by an adjustment to the existing perimeter security fence and new external landscaping works. The result is a more joined-up, secure and practical base environment, where people can train safely, prepare confidently and operate effectively.
We designed the buildings to minimise life cycle costs wherever possible, supporting long-term value and responsible resource use. We also managed all statutory approvals and delivered DREEAM compliance (the Ministry of Defence version of BREEAM).
Working within the constraints of ongoing base operations, we integrated new facilities with established barrack functions, helping day-to-day activity continue safely throughout.
This kind of defence project demands security-aware design thinking, careful coordination and a clear understanding of technical and residential needs living side by side. That is where our experience across defence and secure operational estates makes a real difference for people, place and long-term performance."
