PROJECT OVERVIEW
Transforming an underused bowling alley into a much-loved play area
To enhance the visitor experience at Barnsley Metrodome, we led a shell fit-out scheme for Barnsley Premier Leisure (BPL), converting the existing bowling alley into ‘Adventure Reef,’ an exciting new children’s play and activity space.
Opened in 1989, the Metrodome is a popular sports and leisure centre and home to the much-loved Calypso Cove Waterpark – a collection of pirate themed slides, flumes, diving boards and interactive features.
enhancing spaces
Providing a vibrant and welcoming new space
Revitalising the underused bowling alley and games area at the Metrodome, ‘Adventure Reef’ provides a bright and welcoming indoor play area for children to explore, with a deep-water theme in keeping with the Calypso Cove waterpark. Our role included comprehensive fit out works to prepare the space and creating toilets, baby changing and catering facilities.
The colourful and exciting new space, designed, created and installed by Greenspan Projects, emulates the coral reef and includes interactive play areas, which are segmented with age-appropriate activities aimed at children aged from under one, all the way up to age 14.
Features include rope ladders and tunnels, climbing nets, toddler play, scramble nets and slides, many of which have been sourced using sustainable materials such as Robinia wood.
A dedicated sensory room, designed especially for neurodivergent children and a separate games room for pre-teens, provide spaces for the varying age groups, while an activity court with interactive screen for all ages, offers a zone for burning off some energy.
strategic planning
A collaborative approach to ensuring minimal disruption
Protecting our client’s revenue, we accommodated the demolition and strip out works of the existing bowling alley whilst ensuring the centre could remain fully operational throughout the works, safeguarding visitors and staff at all times.
This was achieved through the careful planning and phasing of the construction, with work areas kept separate from the public and essential facilities, such as first aid, uninterrupted throughout.
We also reviewed and managed the health and safety of the site during the scheme in our role as principal designer for CDM.
Working collaboratively with principal contactors, NU Construction, and our project team, the scheme was delivered to budget, with the new facilities opening in time for half term.
