Work begins on the redevelopment of Wellfield Academy in Leyland

We're delighted to share that work has started on site at Wellfield Academy, one of the five national pathfinder schools in the UK part of the GenZero initiative.

Developed through the Department for Education (DfE) GenZero research project, led by Mott MacDonald, the programme is helping to shape a new benchmark for sustainable school design. It explores how net zero carbon schools can be delivered efficiently, using standardised approaches while creating healthier, nature-connected environments that support the UK’s 2050 net zero ambitions.

At Wellfield Academy, we designed the redevelopment around wellbeing and a strong connection to nature. The new buildings, conceived as a cross-laminated timber structure, replace the existing school on the same site, bringing together a two-storey commons block and a three-storey teaching block. A first-floor bridge links the two, creating a layout that feels connected, intuitive and easy to navigate.

Every space has been considered through a biophilic design lens. Classrooms will have clear views out to greenery, supported by natural ventilation and a calm, muted palette of materials that help create a more relaxed and focused learning environment. Renewable energy technologies are integrated throughout the scheme, supporting both environmental performance and long-term sustainability.

Outdoor learning is a key part of the design. A covered external classroom allows teaching to continue in all seasons, while new sports provision and a central courtyard create opportunities for play, socialising and quiet reflection. These spaces are designed to support concentration, reduce stress and encourage positive wellbeing across the whole school community.

The project is being delivered in phases to minimise disruption and maintain continuity for students and teachers throughout construction. Once complete, it’ll provide:

900 student places
Flexible classrooms
Main hall and activity studio
Grass sports fields
Landscaped courtyard
Outdoor classroom
Outdoor dining areas.
