We are happy to share that work is now underway on site, to transform Upton-by-Chester High School, as part of the Department for Education's (DfE) School Rebuilding Programme.

Due to complete in 2028, the new secondary school will provide a high-quality, inclusive learning environment for 1,845 students, designed to support both educational excellence and long term resilience.

State of the art facilities

Located on land adjacent to the existing school, the development will deliver state of the art educational facilities, including 40 classrooms, science laboratories, studios, a library and specialist teaching spaces for music and design technology. A dedicated accessible special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) unit will support those with additional needs and one building from the original school will be repurposed as a sixth form block, the rest will be demolished.

The school has a new layout, designed to foster connectivity between the students. Over 12,900 m2, the U-shaped building brings classrooms and departments closer together, improving circulation routes and encouraging collaborative working.

A phased approach to construction minimises disruption to day-to-day school life. Completing the new school before removing existing facilities, ensures teaching and learning can continue uninterrupted throughout the redevelopment.

Sustainable learning environment

Sustainability and wellbeing sit at the heart of the design, supporting both environmental responsibility and everyday school life. A biodiverse green roof enhances local ecology, while photovoltaic panels and air source heat pumps reduce energy use and carbon emissions, helping to create an efficient and future-ready learning environment. Expanded cycle storage, increasing from 125 to 230 spaces, promotes active travel and supports healthier choices for students, staff and the wider school community.

This inspiring and modern redevelopment reflects a commitment to the students, staff and the community, enhancing the educational experience now and for years to come.”
