St Paul's Church
Halifax, UK

project overview
Supporting the maintenance of a historic Yorkshire church
St Paul’s Church in Halifax was originally built in 1846 to accommodate 450 worshippers, but soon proved too small for its place in the rapidly developing town. To accommodate the 17,000 people in the town, a new church was built in 1911.
To support the Diocese of Leeds in the maintenance of their historic church, our team led a project to deliver roofing works involving the replacement of large, and very heavy, stone slates.
Ensuring the health and safety of the site was closely managed, we also provided Principal Designer for CDM services, carrying out regular site visits to monitor the works.
RESTORATION
Benefitting from improved thermal efficiency
Giving the Grade II* listed church a new lease of life and enhancing the energy efficiency of the building through reduced heat loss, new lighter Welsh slates have been laid on treated timber, also resolving the ‘wavy’ roof which had formed over years of deterioration.
Inside, issues with water ingress have been resolved and the new warm space invites in worshippers.

PARTNERING
A collaborative approach to successful project delivery
Funded by generous individual donations and grants from various trusts including Benefact Trust, Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust, National Churches Trust, The Wolfson Trust, The Diocese of Leeds Building for Mission Fund & Church Buildings Fund and Congregational & General Charitable Trust, and Give to Go Green, the historic building is now set for the future.
Working in collaboration with Jennings Roofing Ltd, Burton (The Roofing People), SLK Scaffolding Ltd and Galaxy Insulation and Dry Lining Limited the scheme was successfully delivered within budget and ahead of schedule.
