Unveiling a new look for HEMISPHERE One, a future laboratory and workspace in Liverpool
by AHR
We’re pleased to share a new emerging design concept for HEMISPHERE One, the laboratory and workplace development set to join Paddington Village in Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter.
Designed to support the evolving needs of life sciences and technology organisations, the eight-storey, 150,000 sq ft building will bring together laboratory floors above and workplace floors below, supported by spaces that encourage collaboration, creativity and wellbeing.
Alongside flexible laboratories and workspaces, HEMISPHERE One will include:
- shared collaboration areas
- an innovation lab
- a multi-purpose event space
- a wellness studio
- a cafe and new public realm spaces
These spaces are designed to invite people to pause, meet and connect, helping to create a vibrant and welcoming environment within Paddington Village.
Our design concept
A defining feature of the design is its red brick facade, which draws inspiration from Liverpool’s long tradition of robust and beautifully crafted brick buildings. The approach helps the development feel rooted in its context while giving the Paddington Village neighbourhood a recognisable identity.
This scheme feels like a genuine homecoming, because it celebrates Liverpool’s influence while doing something purposeful for the city today. We wanted the building to feel welcoming and legible, with brickwork that tells a story rather than simply wrapping the structure."

Project Lead, ArchitectureSustainability, wellbeing and long-term value
Biophilic design principles run throughout the scheme, bringing nature-led thinking into the workplace to support health, comfort and social connection.
The building is designed with a focus on sustainability and wellbeing and is intended to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ and a WiredScore Certification.
In line with the concept of bringing the inside out, the building will include outdoor workspace alongside areas for exercise and relaxation. These spaces will be available to both building users and the wider public, helping the development contribute to everyday wellbeing in the neighbourhood.
HEMISPHERE One will sit alongside The Spine, the AHR-designed northern home of the Royal College of Physicians. Together, the buildings help shape a confident gateway to Liverpool’s growing innovation district.
