The Spine, designed with a philosophy that people will feel healthier when they walk out of the building than when they walk in, stands out as one of the UK's few WELL Platinum-certified buildings.

Regarded as ‘one of the healthiest buildings in the world’, the northern home for the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) sits at the heart of Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter and is the only venue in the city to hold the coveted title.

The WELL Building Standard is the premier building standard focussed on enhancing people’s health and wellbeing through the buildings we live and work in.

We collaborated with RCP and Liverpool City Council in shaping the transformational office, which will attract future leaders in science, health, technology, culture and education with more than 206,000 sq ft of office space, as part of one of the largest healthcare campuses in Europe.

RCP were real pioneers in adopting the WELL Standard as the perfect way of expressing the core values of the organisation.

Our shared vision was to shape more than just a building, but an experience. A space designed with a philosophy that people will feel healthier when they walk out of the building than when they arrived. This accomplishment underscores not only our design principles but our commitment to enhancing Liverpool’s workplace offering with a hub of wellbeing and innovation.”

The Spine is one of the largest projects to date to implement the principles of biophilia. The health and wellbeing of people using the building will be measured and compared to their health and wellbeing before the build and the resulting data will provide a benchmark for future biophilic design, not only in the workplace but across all sectors.
