Plans have been submitted to revitalise a historic landmark in the heart of Huddersfield

by AHR
Marking an exciting new chapter for the George Hotel, we’re delighted to share that we have submitted plans to transform the Grade II* listed building into a vibrant new 108-bed hotel, complete with business facilities, bar and restaurant.
Located in the heart of St George’s Square, opposite Huddersfield’s iconic railway station and just a short journey from Leeds and Manchester, the George Hotel is a key landmark within the town’s historic centre.
As lead designers, we are working with GMI Construction Ltd, Queensberry Real Estate, Kirklees Council and a specialist consultant team, to realise the complete refurbishment, remodel and redevelopment of the hotel, bringing our expertise in reusing and repurposing existing spaces to the forefront.
Since its purchase by Kirklees Council in 2020, a careful three-phase plan was developed to optimise the layout and secure the George Hotel’s future. Our building consultancy team was appointed to the second phase of the project which involved carrying out vital structural and restoration repairs to the historic building. You can read more about that here.
The focus now turns to the final phase which is its redevelopment.
Through innovative design solutions, we have increased the number of bedrooms, whilst reducing the overall cost of the development to ensure the project’s viability, sustainability and buildability, while maintaining the building’s rich heritage.
Our latest proposals aim to sensitively balance the needs of a modern hotel with the protection of the historic fabric, reducing overall impact on the original structure.

How we’re helping to protect and celebrate the George Hotel:
- Preserving the heart of the building by keeping much of its original internal floors, maintaining its character and craftsmanship
- Reducing the overall mass of the building by simplifying the building’s services, resulting in less equipment cluttering the rooftop and expressing more of the historic roofline on show
- Honouring its heritage by carefully reconstructing the listed John William Street facade, ensuring robustness and longevity for future generations to enjoy
- Simplifying the design to emphasise and enhance the building’s original historic fabric
The redevelopment of the George Hotel is a shining example of how thoughtful design can extend the life of historic structures, enhance their environmental performance, and unlock new opportunities for years to come.
By carefully balancing modern requirements with conservation best practice, we are helping to protect Huddersfield’s proud heritage while making a lasting positive impact on the town’s future.
