Our plans to redevelop Upton-by-Chester High School have received planning approval, marking an exciting step forward in delivering modern, high quality learning environments for students and staff.

Part of the Department for Education’s (DfE) School Rebuilding Programme, the project will replace the existing outdated school buildings with a new purpose-built three-storey secondary school designed to support both current and future teaching and learning needs.

Located off Long Lane in Chester, the new 12,900 m2 U-shaped building will improve how students move through the school day. The layout brings classrooms and departments closer together, supporting more inspired learning and greater collaboration throughout the school.

Designed to accommodate up to 1,845 students, including 345 sixth form places and 175 staff members, the new school will offer a welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment that reflects the school’s ambition and spirit.

Sustainability has been a key part of the school’s redesign, with features including a green roof integrated with solar panels and additional solar canopies across the site, supporting renewable energy generation and helping reduce carbon emissions.

Improved cycle storage, increasing from 125 to 230 spaces, will encourage more active and sustainable travel to and from school, while existing car parking will be retained to maintain accessibility without increasing traffic.

To ensure minimal disruption to learning, the new school will be delivered in phases. Construction of the new building will take place first, followed by the removal of existing facilities. Ensuring students continue to receive a high quality education throughout the redevelopment.

Beyond the building itself, the project reflects a commitment to improving the educational experience for current and future generations. With a modern, efficient and inspiring learning environment, the new school will be a lasting asset to its students, staff and the wider community.”
