WORKING WITHIN A WIDER MASTERPLAN, THE NEW UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING AND GREEN CHEMISTRY LABORATORIES PROVIDES STATE OF THE ART FACILITIES FOR TEACHING AND RESEARCH AT YORK UNIVERSITY, WITHIN THE INNOVATIVE NEW FACILITIES ON THE HESLINGTON EAST CAMPUS.
AHR developed the design from RIBA stage 3 in close stakeholder collaboration with the chemistry department and the construction team to deliver the new building which comprises a specialist Teaching Laboratory to accommodate 160 students, Green chemistry laboratories and research facilities, offices and meeting rooms. The building achieved a BREEAM Very Good rating.
The new building forms part of an established faculty and close collaboration was required to ensure the facilities were delivered to meet the exact requirements of the existing teaching staff. AHR used innovative stakeholder consultation techniques with a live BIM model to help university personnel visualise spaces before making decisions on their organisation. The interior design strategy was then developed in a similar manner with extensive stakeholder liaison. This shared understanding contributed significantly to the ‘Soft Landings’ approach when staff took occupation of the new building.
