THE PROJECT COMPRISED DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A THREE STOREY BUILDING TO HOUSE THE NEW BIOMEDICAL AND NATURAL SCIENCES FACILITIES ON A SITE TO THE EAST OF THE CURRENT BIOLOGY FACILITY ON THE HESLINGTON WEST CAMPUS. AHR DEVELOPED A STAGE D DESIGN INTO PRODUCTION INFORMATION FOR CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTAINED AN ON-SITE ROLE THROUGHOUT PROJECT DELIVERY.
The building houses two large practical teaching laboratories and associated preparation and storage areas including autoclave, cold storage and controlled temperature rooms. There is a large, 120 capacity student computer room to the ground floor level and a self-contained Natural Sciences home base area, located at ground floor position which includes administration and office spaces and flexible seminar areas.
The client requested high quality teaching spaces and these were delivered through the new Natural Science learning studios and Biology laboratories. These areas satisfy key elements of the brief by providing an internal space which inspires students to challenge scientific issues in an environment which benefits student morale and productivity. This is achieved through integration of state-of-the-art e-learning facilities alongside breakout rooms and an area for social gatherings and meetings. The project has achieved a BREEAM rating of Very Good.
