A 25-UNIT AFFORDABLE HOUSING SCHEME IDENTIFIED AS A RURAL EXCEPTION SITE IN CRAWLEY DOWN WEST SUSSEX FOR HASTOE HOUSING. THE SCHEME RESPONDS TO THE EXISTING LANDSCAPE AND REINTERPRETS THE LOCAL VERNACULAR IN A CONTEMPORARY DESIGN.
Small groups of houses are set back from the road and screened by existing or new hedges providing generous front gardens with individual gated entrances to each dwelling. A communal landscaped space also frames the site to the north creating a sense of a village green for the development.
Each house is defined by a centrally located staircase, an attractive double-volume circulation space and internal windows that provide natural light deep into the house and assist with natural ventilation.
The dwellings are designed to meet Building for Life criteria and have achieved Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4.
Our team included the Code for Sustainable Homes pre-assessment as part of their in-house services at planning stage which provided significant added value for the client, Hastoe Housing Association. Resulting in a commendation by the Client for the excellent quality of service provided throughout the project’s implementation.
