AS PART OF CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENTS TO THE STORTHES HALL STUDENT VILLAGE IN KIRKBURTON, AHR WAS COMMISSIONED AS BOTH CONTRACT ADMINISTRATOR AND PRINCIPAL DESIGNER ON A PROJECT TO REMODEL AND REFURBISH THE EXISTING BAR AND NIGHTCLUB, AND THE FIRST FLOOR STUDY AREA. THE SCHEME ALSO INCLUDED EXTERNAL IMPROVEMENTS AND STRUCTURAL ALTERATIONS.
Storthes Hall is the largest student accommodation in Huddersfield, boasting 1386 ensuite rooms, as well as a range of on-site facilities such as a bar and lounge area, games, cinema, study and relaxation rooms and a gym.
In order to deliver an environment that was suitable to the users’ needs and specifications, feedback and ideas were sought directly from the students, prior to commencing the refurbishment works. Their feedback suggested that the current spaces were undefined and that they would like a more comfortable, inviting, colourful, functional and friendly environment.
The client’s brief required the refurbishment project to provide both a bar and nightclub function that reflected and exceeded any offering provided within the town centre. The facility had to be a truly unique, contemporary design to ensure the space worked not only as a fully functional, active bar and club but also as a key marketing tool for the client when selling the student experience to potential future tenants.
In addition to the bar, a study suite within the first floor of the building provides students with exceptional facilities for quiet working and group discussion, while also offering flexibility for corporate users hiring the facility during summer.
To achieve this, the project was carefully designed to suit the brief, combining functionality with colour and modern design, with rooms including a fully operational cinema suite, electronic games room, table tennis and pool facilities, full catering kitchen, bar and lounge.
AHR fully coordinated the design of the internal refurbishment, loose furniture, catering equipment, AV and the sound and nightclub lighting.
The project was successfully completed, creating improved light and spacious study areas and a bar and venue that accommodates for both relaxation and regular student events.
