In close collaboration with the joint client body, the design process saw regular meetings and workshops held throughout in order to optimise the design approach and ensure the building remained within budget.
The brief required an excellent and safe driver and building user experience with well-marked entrances, a straightforward and efficient layout, and simple to negotiate for both vehicles and pedestrians.
The envelope was required to be simple to construct, economical and minimise light pollution to nearby adjacent residential buildings, both completed and planned as part of the developing masterplan. Being both highly visible and situated on a gateway site to the city centre, the design and appearance was required to be of high aesthetic and architectural quality.
In response, a deceptively simple cladding system was designed, comprising of a single panel type tessellated across the façade and optimised to aluminium sheet dimensions to minimise waste.
The overall result is a visually interesting, distinctive and sculptural façade that makes a positive and memorable architectural statement on this gateway site into New Bailey and the adjacent Manchester city centre.
