UNDER OUR LONGSTANDING RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF HUDDERSFIELD, AHR WAS APPOINTED AS DESIGNER, LEAD CONSULTANT, CONTRACT ADMINISTRATOR, PROJECT MANAGER AND PRINCIPAL DESIGNER FOR THE WORKS TO THIS GRADE II* LISTED HISTORIC CANAL WAREHOUSE.
The project involved the conversion of an historic canal warehouse building from twelve individual flats into office accommodation for various university departments.
AHR developed the space planning and interior design concepts for the building in close cooperation with the University’s Estates Department and representatives of the end users to ensure the building would provide them with high-class, contemporary office accommodation whilst preserving the historic character of the building.
The interior design concept incorporates the historic timber columns and beams which form the loadbearing structure of the building and transform them into a feature, offset against modern plastered walls and floor finishes, merging places, past and present.
Due to the location of the building adjacent to the canal, works had to be coordinated with the Canal & River Trust and their permission to carry out works to the elevation had to be obtained. Works to the canal facing elevation were carried out using a pontoon.
