THE NEW CANCER CENTRE FOR THE ROYAL SHREWSBURY HOSPITAL NHS TRUST IS AN EXTENSION TO THE EXISTING FACILITIES ORIGINALLY DESIGNED BY THE PRACTICE IN THE EARLY 1980’S. THE REQUIREMENT FOR THIS PROJECT WAS TO DELIVER TREATMENT SUITES FOR ONCOLOGY AND HAEMATOLOGY IN A NEW TWO STOREY STRUCTURE THAT PLUGGED INTO THE EXISTING FACILITY. WE WERE ALSO CHARGED WITH CREATING A NEW ENTRANCE AT THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING AND REMODELLING OUTPATIENTS CONSULTING SPACES.
Our approach was to use the two new build components (treatment suites and entrances) to “sandwich” the retained building and completely re-vamp the appearance and feel of the exterior and interior to create a wholly new patient environment and experience.
Using strong bold colours, maximising natural light by re-routing corridors alongside courtyards and using robust modern materials, we have re-imagined the whole facility and alongside the client, clinicians and patients, collaborated to create an uplifting, encouraging feel throughout the building.
