AHR WAS COMMISSIONED TO DEVELOP A CLADDING CONCEPT FOR THE EXTENSION TO THE EXISTING MULTI STOREY CAR PARK AT MANCHESTER PICCADILLY STATION. THE ORIGINAL CAR PARK WAS RUNNING AT FULL CAPACITY AND NETWORK RAIL IDENTIFIED THE NEED TO INCREASE THE AVAILABLE SPACES.
The car park extends the horizontal floor plates over an area, which was only surface parking. Our concept used a series of six rainscreen cladding panels of varying depth and size to create a random form, giving the building interest and visual relief.
The panels are a combination of solid, perforated and louvered panels to allow the required cross flow for naturally ventilation car park. The material for the panel is corten steel, which respects surrounding brickwork but gives the car park a modern image. The car park is set onto a solid base which highlights the various uses contained within.
