KIRKLEES COUNCIL INITIALLY COMMISSIONED AHR TO DEVELOP THE OUTLINE BRIEFING DOCUMENTS AND CLIENT REQUIREMENTS FOR A NEW LEISURE CENTRE FOR HUDDERSFIELD WHICH WAS NEEDED TO REPLACE THE EXISTING OUTDATED FACILITIES. AHR WENT ON TO WIN THE TENDER TO BE LEAD CONSULTANT AND TO DESIGN THE NEW BUILDINGPROVIDING A STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY TO INCLUDE AN EXTENSIVE RANGE OF WET AND DRY SPORTING FACILITIES, OFFICES, MEETING ROOMS, CAFE AND KITCHEN AND ASSOCIATED LANDSCAPING AND HIGHWAYS WORKS.
The objective of the Client’s requirements was to achieve a substantial new sports facility for the population of Kirklees which would rival other facilities in the north of England in providing dry sports and swimming provision. The development’s town centre site was chosen especially to ensure that the building contributed to the urban and social regeneration of Huddersfield through quality of design in character and innovation and through a well-considered solution to the spatial requirements. Accessibility is also a key requirement with the facility exceeding all statutory requirements for disabled use.
The Centre has an efficient and easily navigated layout with clearly defined wet and dry zones divided by a central, top lit double height atrium. This central hub of the building features artwork especially designed for the Project by Community Artist Stella Corrall, as does the Foyer and Café Area.
The wet zone is arranged especially for easy access to the changing rooms and to navigate to the pools. The first floor is split by the atrium which separates the large fitness studio from the studios, changing, pool spectators and ancillary accommodation.
The overall gross internal floor area of the building is 12,500m². The facility is able to be used by the local community, national swimmers, national badminton, netball, basketball and volleyball players, special eventers as well as casual users, discretionary groups and clubs.
The Centre addresses the demographic make-up of Kirklees Metropolitan Borough and caters for the needs of a 21st Century, multi-cultural Society.
