PLANNING PERMISSION FOR THIS NEW CENTRE FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING (CIL) FOR THE LONDON BOROUGH OF CAMDEN WAS WON IN 2014. THE CENTRE WILL PROVIDE LEARNING, TRAINING AND REHABILITATION ACTIVITIES, PERSONAL CARE AND PHYSICAL FITNESS ACTIVITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR SOCIAL ENTERPRISES AND GARDENING SERVICES.
The CIL facilities includes: teaching space, IT resources, arts and craft areas, spaces for personal care and physical fitness, a training kitchen, café and gardens. This accommodation will provide training opportunities to help people back into employment and supports social care services in the borough for young persons and adults in the community.
The Centre will support people living with sensory and mobility disabilities as well as people with dementia, learning disabilities and mental health problems. In addition, it will provide new services for younger people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and autism.
To develop the brief, LB Camden and our team partnered in an innovative consultation with care specialists and end-user groups to explore ways that the building could fully meet the diverse and specific needs of all the users involved. We developed a variety of techniques to communicate their design concepts: using simultaneous speech-to-text interpretation, signing, use of tactile maps and models and the use of carefully designed ‘easy-read’ format presentations to facilitate the consultation with a remarkable degree of success.
