GREEN BLOCK IS A NEW MIXED-USE MASTERPLAN COMMISSIONED TO BE UNVEILED AT THE 2017 WORLD EXPO TO BE HELD IN ASTANA, KAZAKHSTAN, ENDORSED BY PRESIDENT NURSULTAN NAZARBAYEV. AHR WON THE INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION FOR THE SCHEME IN 2013.
Located at the southern edge of an axial route to West of the city, the centre of which is the Khan Shatyr, the 24 ha site will be mixed-use; containing commercial, residential and hotel structures as well as a free-standing kindergarten school and ETFE biodomes.
The project will comprise 360,000sqm within 15 buildings connected by a landscaped podium structure. The buildings are arranged to be a barrier for the prevailing cold winds whilst also facing the wetlands to the south and enclosing a lake which is home to different species of the Steppe landscape that surrounds Astana.
