COAL ORCHARD IS AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT OF THE WIDER REGENERATION OF TAUNTON THAT CELEBRATES THE RIVER TONE, EMBEDDING IT AT THE HEART OF THE DEVELOPMENT AMIDST ENHANCING THE AREA'S CULTURAL CREDENTIALS TO CREATE A CONNECTED AND COHESIVE DESTINATION THAT WILL BRING VITALITY TO THE TOWN.
Our design integrates a mix of varied places including residential, retail, workspace, restaurants and gyms, to create a valuable and engaging destination for the community. Connectivity with the wider area is prioritised, with the site providing an essential link between the town centre and other key areas along the river, being the first in a chain of developments that will connect the station directly to the established town centre.
The incorporation of a riverfront plaza with a stepped terrace makes the most of its position on the River Tone, with pedestrian priority ‘openways’ leading to public spaces which culminate in improved access to waterside and riverside walks and facilities.
Our design response has boosted public realm, knitting together key existing buildings, streets and alleyways, to enliven these routes by the creation of vibrant and dynamic spaces. Recognising the need to maintain existing service access to wider transport links, we have identified main routes and active public spaces that consider, complement and work with the site's specific context to achieve a unified development.
