A&E REFURBISHMENT

  • THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN REDESIGNED AND REFURBISHED TO MODERNISE AND RECONFIGURE EMERGENCY CARE PROVISION, INCREASING CAPACITY TO DELIVER AND ACHIEVE NATIONAL PERFORMANCE TARGETS. A KEY FOCUS OF THE PROJECT HAS BEEN APPROPRIATELY SITUATING DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS TO MINIMISE PATIENT MOVEMENT AND ENABLE SHARED RESOURCES, FLEXIBILITY AND PROXIMITY OF STAFF FACILITIES.

  • The design consists of a two storey extension providing a Clinical Decision Unit and office accommodation with a large waiting area and reception for patients located adjacent to triage facilities in a new single storey extension. The existing department is fully remodelled to provide new resuscitation suites, treatment rooms and Minor and Major departments.

The ambulance drop off area has been separated from the ambulatory patient entrance which previously sat adjacent to each other, providing a more focused approach to the building.

  • Construction work was successfully phased to maintain full use of the existing emergency facilities during this period.

With capacity to treat up to 70,000 patients, the project is a major expansion to the accident and emergency facilities that were completed in 1984, which had only 20,000 capacity.
