THROUGH INNOVATIVE DESIGN THE SCHOOL BREAKS AWAY FROM TRADITIONAL PATTERNS OF EDUCATIONAL DELIVERY, DEVELOPING A SOLUTION THAT OFFERS THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THE SCHOOL TO CONTINUALLY UPDATE PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICE.
The design is based on an offsite manufactured kit of parts concept that can be used on other school buildings thereby increasing value for money and driving down costs. The design principles have been directly applied to five additional new build secondary schools in the city. The scheme takes an imaginative approach to the creation of 21st century learning environments, with a wide range of spaces to suit all styles of learning from traditional group learning to seminar and individual study.
The scheme has been designed to meet the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. One of the main drivers in achieving this rating has been the innovative use of offsite fabrication and a pre-cast concrete frame which allows large column-free spaces, achieves a low carbon footprint and benefits from high thermal mass.
Through innovative design AHR has helped the school break away from traditional patterns of educational delivery, developing a solution that offers the opportunity for the school to continually update pedagogical practice, and not be limited by a traditional cellular arrangement dominated by teacher-led classroom accommodation.
“THIS IS A BUILDING WHICH WILL EASILY SUPPORT A VARIETY OF APPROACHES TO LEARNING AND TEACHING AND WILL ACCOMMODATE CHANGES IN PRACTICE FOR DECADES TO COME.“
