ST ENOCH

STATION

  • THIS IS ONE OF SEVEN STATION REFURBISHMENTS FOR SPT IN GLASGOW. HAVING ESTABLISHED A DESIGN PHILOSOPHY AND MATERIAL PALETTE FOR INTERNAL SPACES, ST ENOCH REQUIRED REPLACEMENT OF TWO POP-UPS LOCATED AT THE NORTH AND SOUTH ENDS OF ST ENOCH SQUARE.

  • Inspired by 19th century twisted, iron structures, AHR designed a particular form of canopy for the Glasgow subway. With its glasshouses, station roofs and palm houses (such as the Kibble in Glasgow Botanic Gardens), the city excels in these peculiar forms, exporting them from the Clyde Valley all over the world.

The new canopies will replace outdated ‘pop-up’ entrances at the north and south ends of St Enoch Square, creating new entrance points to the redesigned subway forecourt and platform. The structure of the first canopy, comprising rolled arches tied together by longitudinal steel rods, was erected in just one night shift. This curved and interlaced structure was designed to give the ground level of St Enoch Station a contemporary and dynamic look.
