A SUCCESSFUL COMPETITION TO RE-PROVIDE THE EXISTING COMMUNITY HOSPITAL SERVICES LOCATED IN THE TOWN CENTRE AND ENHANCE THEM WITH SPACE FOR TWO DOCTORS’ SURGERIES ON A GREENFIELD SITE WITHIN THE TOWN’S ECO PARK.
The facility is organised on three levels; ground floor with main entrance concourse, two Doctors’ Surgeries, Outpatient Department including an ambulatory and diagnostic suite, pharmacy and main café space; first floor with a 36 bed inpatient unit, midwifery led unit and a Healthy Living Centre; and a lower ground level housing FM, plant, administrative and staff support facilities. This allows for a complete separation of support and clinical circulation with the primary distribution occurring at lower ground level before rising to upper floors through lifts and stairs.
The Midwife Led Unit (MLU) is located at the first floor of the new community hospital, accessed off the main entrance hub and adjacent to inpatients. All delivery spaces and the 4 bed bay have been provided with external walls for natural light and views and the unit will also look down onto the an internal courtyard that has a decked area accessible to expectant mothers and carers during their stay to allow them access to fresh air as required, in a secure environment. The MLU is capable of supporting approximately 100 deliveries per year based on the service model developed within the county. The concept design provides for a dedicated, independent unit to operate as an integrated element within the whole facility.
